Gang violence sucks. I’ll say it again: GANG VIOLENCE SUCKS!!
I was reading the LA Times today when I stumbled upon this article. On sunday night, Jamiel Shaw was within yards of his home in Los Angeles, CA, walking home from the mall and talking to his girlfriend on his cellphone when a white sedan drove up. Two Latino men got out of the car and asked him, “Where you from?” which according to the LA Times is gang slang for, “What gang are you with?” When Jamiel didn’t answer they shot him to death. His father heard the shots and ran outside to find his son bleeding on the sidewalk.
Jamiel wasn’t a gang-banger. He was a high school senior football star who’s father had recently fielded calls from Stanford and Rutgers universities about his son, and an excellent student with hopes of being a sports agent one day.
I don’t know Jamiel, but my heart weeps and breaks for his family and loved ones. Please join me in praying for those who loved him.
Rest in peace, Jamiel Shaw. Your influence on the world will be missed, even by those who never knew you.
