Happy Feet

So now that Kate’s foot is on the mend, she and I have decided that we want to take ballroom dancing lessons together (starting with EC Swing, then WC Swing and so on). Kate’s been a dancer her entire life and I’ve began swing dancing fairly casually without much formal instruction to speak of when I was in college, and so together we decided to take it to the next level and actually get good at it! We’ve been dancing together once already at HaLo and had a blast. She’s a much more talented dancer than I and as such makes a terrific dance partner because she has the experience to pick-up on the subtleties of the steps (which she then teaches to me), the desire to be a good follow, and the patience to work with me as I learn to lead better. All we have to do now is carve time out of our schedules to make this happen. I’m so excited!

Along these lines, I was perusing YouTube earlier this week and came across this pair of swing videos that blew my mind.

This one of Lindy Hop is what I would LOVE to be able to do at some point, but I don’t think it will happen for quite some time (Watch the couple with the dude in jeans… he’s really good)

And this is one that displays a skill level that is a little more realistic for us.

Do any of you dance? If so, what kind of dancing do you do and where do you do it?

Cheers!

blake - you know i dance. the best kind: MJ baby. haha seriously - right now i’m probably most into swing, then waltz, then maybe salsa, tho i’d love to do more tango, rumba and more..

as for the first video that stuff is pretty sick. the style in that video and up here in seattle is different than what i’m used to - seems more sporadic and not quite as smooth - but maybe thats the tempo of the music. while those moves were impressive, a lot of those aerials seem more like gymnastic feats than dance feats, i don’t know if i’m being a purist or not.

the style i’m a lil more used to is closer to this video of a group i would have auditioned for my senior year had i not been an RA.

you guys wanna go dancing at the fremont abbey arts center tomorrow?

Love the dancing!!! Totally want to take Lindy lessons, as I only know some basic swing and would love to get better. Salsa has been fun, and I can even do a little cha cha, but ballroom is a definite must in my life as well. I want to actually know what I am doing when Darwin spins me around on the floor. So I like the fundraiser idea-dance party at Q!!!

YES, get that girl dancing again! Glad her foot has finally healed. I think you guys should take a foxtrott class. There is a cheap place near the U, called Community Fitness that hosts a lot of very affordable classes that are perfect for couples. And if Lisa is still teaching there, she is kick!
